Abraham – The Father of Our Faith

He is the ultimate patriarch; all three major world religions trace their roots to this man, yet what do we really know of our father, Abraham? What was it about this dear old man that has the entire world fighting for his blessing? One could easily spend an entire lifetime researching this man, the times in which he lived and the impact that this single life has had on the entire world. What was it that made Abraham so unique?

The Bible doesn’t tell us much about his early life, yet stories from Abram’s early days have been passed down from generation to generation through the Jewish sages. Unfortunately for the Christians, these stories have not been shared. This is sad because if we knew more about this man, we might be able to learn more about the God in which he served. If Abraham was considered a friend of God, and we too want that same status, we should learn all we can about him, right?

The Book of Jasher, which is mentioned twice in the Bible, is a great resource for learning more about Abraham. Although not considered Scripture, the Book of Jasher gives us insight not available in the canonized text. When we understand the times in which he lived, we can better understand the times in which we live, for truly there is nothing new under the sun. These were the days of Nimrod, ruler of all the earth and a mighty hunter before Adonai. Abram was one man who was able to stand up to this would-be god in the name of Adonai El Shaddai. Would we be able to stand up to such a man in our time?

Abraham ~ The Father of Our Faith shows us, using both Genesis and Jasher, just how this son of an idol maker could rise up in faith, becoming the father of many nations whose life and faith affects the world even today. Maybe this way our faith too can be built up, strengthening us for the day coming when we ourselves will have to stand up and say, “I will not bow!” just as Abram did so long ago.
